Fugate, James (P1, C2 L10)

Private James Fugate was born ca. 1893, at Jackson, Breathitt County, Kentucky. He enlisted with the Machine Gun Squad of Company F, 2nd Kentucky Infantry on 29 March 1917, at Jackson. He was mustered into federal service with his company on 16 April 1917. He died of pneumonia on 19 May 1917, at the Clark County [Kentucky] Hospital. He is buried in the Hightop Cemetery, Breathitt County, Kentucky.

James Fugate, of the Second Kentucky Regiment, died this morning in the Clark county hospital of pneumonia. He was about 24 years old. He had been in the hospital for several days, and early this morning Chaplain H. M. DeMoss was sent for, and the news went out that the patient could not live. He died about 10:45 o’clock.

Instead of the regular church services at the Central Baptist Church Sunday morning, Chaplain DeMoss will conduct a military funeral over the body of young Fugate. The body will be sent to his home at Jackson for burial, accompanied by Chaplain DeMoss, Captain Back and an escort of six soldiers. The soldiers and congregation will meet at the church here at about 10:45 o’clock, and the funeral will be at 11 o’clock.

James Fugate, son of Charles Fugate living on Stray Branch and a private in the Machine Gun Squad of Co. F, 2nd Reg., died of pneumonia at the hospital in Winchester. Saturday morning all military honor was shown him and the entire people of Winchester showed the greatest respect for the dead boy in every way. The body was brought to Breathitt for burial and was accompanied by Capt. Back, Chaplain De Moss and 6 members of the Machine Gun Co.
