Hughes, Jonathan A. (P3, C1, L20)

Sergeant Jonathan “Adam” Hughes, 21, of Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky, was killed on Saturday, 19 March 2005 in Iraq when his armored Humvee (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle - HMMWV) vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device (IED) during an escort patrol for a convoy enroute to Baghdad International Airport.

At the time of his death, Hughes was serving with B Battery 1st Battalion, 623rd Field Artillery, based in Campbellsville, Kentucky. He joined the Guard in May 2001 when he was 17 and graduated from Marion County High School, where he was a member of JROTC.

His unit mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom in November 2004 and deployed to Southwest Asia in January 2005. Hughes was posthumously promoted to sergeant and was awarded the Kentucky Distinguished Service Medal.
Hughes went by his middle name, Adam. Hughes is buried in the Holy Name of Mary Cemetery in Marion County. In June 2010, route connecting U.S. 68 to Metts Drive, was named in memory of Hughes.
