Mercer, Carl A. (P1, C3, L7)

Private Carl A. Mercer, 25, of Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. Mercer joined Company G, 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment Kentucky Infantry. Mercer was struck and killed by a train on 26 August 1917, at Louisville, Kentucky. At the time his unit was on federal duty in Kentucky, guarding railroads from possible sabotage, prior to U. S. involvement in World War I.

An undated newspaper clipping reports that Mercer's “mangled body” was found on the L & N switch near Seventh and Oak streets in Louisville.

Military Funeral to be Given C. A. Mercer

Soldier Killed By Train Had Been Member of Regiment For Four Months.

A military funeral will be given Carl A. Mercer, the private in Company G whose mangled body was found on the L & N switch beside the plant of the Turnet, Day & Woolworth Company, near Seventh and Oak streets, Sunday night.

The funeral will take place at the former residence of Mercer at 428 Marret street this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock and the burial will take place in Cave Hill cemetery. Former comrades-in-arms will march beside the hearse and “taps” will be sounded over the grave.

Mercer was 25 years old and the son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Mercer. He had been a member of the One Hundred and Fifty-ninth [should read 149th] Regiment for four months.
