Powers, Harry D. (P1, C3, L14)

Sergeant Harry D. Powers was born 18 May 1898, in Shelby County, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Kentucky National Guard on 22 September 1915, with Company K, 1st Kentucky Infantry Regiment. Powers served with his company on the Mexican Border Service, 1916-1917.

Powers died while on active duty 13 August 1917, of acute dilatation of the heart, caused by typhoid fever. He is buried in the Floydsburg Cemetery, Crestwood, Oldham County, Kentucky.

Sergt. Harry Powers, well known in Shelbyville where he lived when he became a member of Co. K, the local military company two years ago, died Monday morning at the City Hospital in Louisville. He was about twenty years of age.

Sergt. Powers was taken ill of typhoid fever afterwards contracting pneumonia while the company was on guard in Pulaski county and was sent to Louisville for treatment three weeks ago. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Foree Powers, of O’Bannon Station, and a grandson of Rev. W. E. Powers, who at the time of his death was the oldest and one of the best-known Baptist preachers in Kentucky.
