LTC (R) Willoughby S. “Sandy” Goin III
Goin graduated from Frankfort High School in 1958, he joined the Army and became a helicopter pilot serving two tours in Vietnam. He was the recipient of the Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star and 48 Air Medals. Goin was awarded the Kentucky Medal for Valor as command pilot of a Kentucky Army National Guard UH-1 "Huey" helicopter medical evacuation mission on January 29, 1978. He and his copilot and crew chief transported a victim of an automobile accident from Pineville to Lexington in the extreme weather conditions of a winter blizzard, cold temperatures and low fuel saving the victim's life. A Master Aviator, Goin logged over 12,500 flying hours, both military and civilian. Following his retirement, Goin remained active in the National Guard community. Goin was one of the founding members of the Kentucky National Guard Memorial Fund and served on the board until his death. Goin passed away on March 10, 2018.
